Lauren's Wish Sells Out Morgantown Fundraiser Fashion Show

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) Models took to the runway Tuesday night in Morgantown to showcase new fashion trends and a great cause as Lauren's Wish hosted a fundraising fashion show at WVU's Erikson Alumni Center in Morgantown for the third year in a row.

Lauren's Wish is a Morgantown-based support center that bridges the gap to help people struggling with opioid addiction before entering long-term treatment.

The event featured live music, a full buffet, and live and silent auctions throughout the evening.

12 News spoke with Ms. West Virginia International 2024 and event co-chair, Austyn Skeen, about the importance of community support for the event.

“It’s huge, we wouldn’t have this without the community.” You have to have people willing to give, we are so lucky to live here. I feel like Morgantown as a whole, I'm not from here and I just feel like I've lived here for thirteen years. I love it. I have a family here now, and having this type of community is just great,” Skeen said.

Thirteen local boutiques and clothing stores were featured in the fashion show, along with artwork from WVU School of Fashion students. The season's trends and new collections were presented, paying homage to Lauren Cole, the namesake of Lauren's Wish.

Lauren struggled with her opioid addiction and was on the road to recovery before her death after a relapse in 2020, leading her parents to create Lauren's Wish in honor of their late daughter's dream.

“Lauren's Wish's long-term goal is to open 'Lauren's Ladder,' which would be a sister to 'Jacob's Ladder.' So instead of just being a triage center, it would also be a processing center. The fentanyl and opioid epidemic is huge here in West Virginia, and we lead the nation in overdose deaths each year. Lauren’s Wish is here to provide that middleman so that we can hopefully, you know, save lives and reduce that rate,” Skeen said.

Since October 2023, Lauren's Wish has helped over 500 people and this year, her fundraising fashion show sold out, getting closer than ever to Lauren's goal.
