STILL WATER, Okla. Full days of action continued for the 2024 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, as Wake Forest men's tennis competed in singles and doubles throughout Tuesday (May 21). DK Suresh Ekambaram/Holden Koons, currently ranked as the second-ranked doubles team in the country, showcased their usual impressive play in a first-round victory. Singles, senior Philippe Moroni once again put in a remarkable performance, but saw his stay in Stillwater come to an end, after a defeat in the round of 16.

Moroni fights in three sets and narrowly fails in the round of 16

Philippe Moroni had his second appearance of the week mid-afternoon, taking on Shunsuke Mitsui, a junior from the University of Tennessee. The two players faced off in what became an interesting clash before Moroni suffered a straight set defeat.

After falling short in his first four matches, Moroni won two of his next three in the first set. He finally lost the first third, 6-2. The senior managed to tie the second set at 2-2 early on, before forcing another even score and eventually taking a 4-3 advantage. Finding yet another tie at 5, Moroni held on to create a tiebreaker and finish victoriously (7-6 (1)) in the second set.

The third set started the same way as the second, even at 2-2 on the board. Mitsui managed to take the lead with two straight wins, 4-2, before Moroni evened the score. Final two matches were won by Mitsui, winning the match in three frames.
