Japan says experts meet in China to ease concerns over release of treated radioactive water from Fukushima

Japan said on Sunday its experts had held talks with their Chinese counterparts to try to allay Beijing's concerns over the release of treated radioactive wastewater from the wreckage of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.

These rejections were met with opposition from fishing groups and neighboring countries, notably China, which banned all imports of Japanese seafood. The Chinese decision largely affected Japanese scallop producers and exporters to China.

During discussions in Dalian, northeast China, on Saturday, Japanese officials provided scientific explanations of how the releases were carried out safely as planned, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

An earthquake and tsunami in 2011 damaged Fukushima the plant's power supply and reactor cooling functions, triggering the meltdown of three reactors and causing large quantities of radioactive wastewater to build up.
