IHC asks why former PM aide signed deal

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court asked during a hearing on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan's bail plea in the ₹190 million case why the aide Prime Minister signed the agreement between the NCA and a real estate businessman.

The court observed that this was a private agreement between the NCA and the real estate tycoon, asking how this matter came before the cabinet and was approved by the Prime Minister.

Imran Khan's lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa said the NCA had stipulated cabinet approval for the return of the money and Shahzad Akbar had placed a memorandum before the cabinet, which approved it. He said Khan, as prime minister, had approved the note so that the money could return to Pakistan and that he was not the beneficiary.

IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri heard the bail application of the PTI founder, who was arrested in the ₹190 million NAB case.

The court expressed indignation at the non-appearance of the investigating officer and asked why he did not appear and whether he should issue a warrant to secure his appearance.

The petitioners' lawyer Latif Khosa said the NCA had frozen the amount in the UK, which was transferred to Pakistan as part of a deal. The frozen amount of 190 million pounds was sent to Pakistan after tax deductions and 171 million pounds was transferred to the Supreme Court account, which was returned to the Government of Pakistan by the Supreme Court on November 23, 2023.

Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri asked how the money arrived in the Supreme Court account, whether the money was the proceeds of crime and why it was frozen. The lawyer replied that it was a suspicious amount which was later cleared and a confidentiality deed was later signed in which Shahzad Akbar was the signatory.

He said Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were not among the beneficiaries of the money. He said the real estate tycoon provided 458 kanals of land for a university in Sohawa, which were first transferred to Zulfi Bukhari and then to a trust whose trustees are PTI founder and Bushra Bibi.

He said the real estate tycoon purchased the land and later built a university there where students were now studying.

Latif Khosa said that the institutes founded by the PTI founder are technologically advanced and only Shaukat Khanum spends Rs 9 billion annually and people trust him and hence give them funds. He said that Al-Qadir University was not Imran Khan's first project. The court ordered NAB special public prosecutor Amjad Pervez to argue the application and adjourned the matter to April 29.
