Fragments of avian influenza virus found in milk sold at grocery stores

Fragments of avian influenza virus found in milk sold at grocery stores

Jeff Bennett:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced that milk samples taken from grocery stores across the United States have tested positive for remnants of the avian influenza virus that infected dairy cows.

But the agency says it's confident the milk you're buying is safe. Officials also said the findings suggest the virus is more widespread among dairy herds than previously thought.

To slow the spread of infection, the Department of Agriculture announced today that dairy cows must be tested for the virus before moving to new states.

Today we're joined by Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Brown University Pandemic Center.

Thank you for joining us.

So let's start with the latest update, particles of this virus found in commercially available pasteurized milk. How concerned should everyday consumers be?

Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo, Brown University School of Public Health: There's no need to worry at this time.

Finding evidence of genetic material, what the test results showed us, is not surprising in itself. To find out if the virus can infect us, we need to do another type of test. And this test wasn't like that. They're actually taking that test right now.

But since we use pasteurization, there is no reason to think we will be harmed. And there is no reason to think that the H5N1 virus is any different from all the other pathogens that might be present in milk. Pasteurization does not remove the genetic material of these pathogens, but it alters them, killing them or activating them so they can no longer infect us.

And I fully expect that to be the result of the test results, giving me even more reason to choose pasteurized milk over raw milk.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
