World Water Forum opens in Bali
ANKARA
The 10th World Water Forum officially opened on Monday in the Indonesian tourist resort of Bali, under the theme Water for Shared Prosperity.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo attended the opening ceremony and presented Prabowo Subianto as his successor.
Organized by the World Water Council, the largest international water event takes place from May 18-25 with participants from more than 70 countries, including academics, civil society organizations and the private sector .
World leaders in attendance include Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof and Fijian President Wiliame Katonivere, as well as billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk.
The main topics the forum will focus on include water conservation, safe drinking water and sanitation, food and energy security, and natural disaster mitigation.
Jokowi, in his opening speech, said that by 2050, some 500 million small farmers, who contribute 80 percent of the world's food, will be most vulnerable to drought. “By bringing us all together in Bali today, Indonesia hopes that the world can continuously join hands to strengthen the commitment to collaboration to overcome global water challenges,” he said. added.
“Let’s preserve our water today for shared prosperity tomorrow,” he said.
The president of the World Water Council, Loïc Fauchon, said that water unites people, but that planet Earth has been damaged by men. “And we are here because, aware of this tragedy, we want to repair it and give future generations hope, desire and serenity,” he added.
