Imran Khan wants to appear before SC in person

ISLAMABAD: Jailed PTI founder Imran Khan on Wednesday filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC), seeking permission to appear in his personal capacity in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendment case.

Sources told ARY News that the deposed Prime Minister had sent a written request to the Chief Justice, seeking permission to appear in person before SC in the matter.

The application was forwarded to the Supreme Court through the Adiala Prison Administration. The apex court has fixed May 30 for hearing on the NAB amendment case.

In the latest hearing, PTI founder Imran Khan appeared before the Supreme Court (SC) via video link after a five-member bench approved his appearance.

Review petitions

The federal government has filed a review plea in the case of the NAB amendments under the SC Practices and Procedures Act and has implicated the Federation of Pakistan, the National Accountability Bureau and the PTI founder.

Citing no violation of fundamental rights with the NAB amendments, the federal government pleaded with the SC to overturn its decision in the case. Legislating is the right of Parliament, the plea states.

Verdict

In a 2-1 majority verdict, the top court approved Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan's petition challenging amendments made to the country's accountability laws during the previous government's tenure led by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

The top court also reinstated corruption cases against public office holders that were dismissed following changes to National Accountability Bureau laws.
