PM Modi to lead BJP's final election campaign in Phase 7 from his constituency in Varanasi
New Delhi: Prime Minister's constituency Varanasi will be the center from where the BJP will carry out its poll-related activities once the sixth phase of polling is over. Sources within the BJP said PM Modi would base himself in his constituency from May 26 to June 1, while he would hold rallies and campaigns in neighboring seats of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal Western.
The BJP leaders who DH said it was also the norm for the Prime Minister in 2014 and 2019, Modi chose this seat as his election campaign base. Varanasi, along with 12 more seats in Uttar Pradesh, are among the 57 seats that will be voted on in the final phase.
Soon after polling for the sixth phase ends on May 25, Prime Minister Modi will spend the night in Varanasi and stay in the city till June 1, BJP leaders said. During these days, apart from campaigning in Varanasi, the Prime Minister will hold rallies in Patna and Patliputra in Bihar, as well as headquarters in eastern UP and West Bengal.
Sources in the party said the Prime Minister would hold an organizational baithak in Varanasi during this period. Last time, he held a meeting with karyakartas, and on Tuesday, he held a meeting with women voters, where 10 women each from 1,909 booths were mobilized, said a leader of the party's UP unit, involved in the preparations. Prime Minister Modi has, in the last fortnight, paid two visits to Varanasi and, a day before filing his candidature on May 14, he spent a night at his headquarters. On the day of his appointment, Modi paid homage at the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
A senior party spokesperson, who wished to remain anonymous, said Modi had changed his schedule to accommodate his seat. Despite his popularity, Prime Minister Modi makes it a point to reserve time for his seat and appeal for votes, unlike opposition leaders who give up their seats after winning or losing, the spokesperson said, adding that in the last decade, the Prime Minister has organized at least 50 programs in Varanasi.
So far, according to BJP sources, PM Modi has held over 250 rallies across the country during this election season. In the run-up to the 2014 general elections, when he was first elected in Varanasi, Modi had held as many as 437 rallies in the month leading up to the elections.
