PML-N's decision to ban Imran Khan's party gets major support from PPP

Islamabad, July 18 (PTI) The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s decision to ban jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s embattled party received a major boost on Thursday after the Pakistan Peoples Party, a major coalition partner, announced it would support all Cabinet decisions. Information Minister Atta Tarar on Monday made a major announcement regarding the government’s decision to ban Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, creating a frenzy against the move, with many wondering whether the Nawaz Sharif-led Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had the support of its coalition partners on the issue. It was not immediately clear whether Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which is the third-largest party in parliament and a key pillar on which the coalition rests, was reluctant to take a clear stand and some of its senior leaders have refused to support the government. PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bokhari eventually spoke to X to clarify the situation and categorically stated that President Asif Ali Zardari’s party was with the government. The Pakistan Peoples Party supports the federal government and the decisions of the Cabinet because we are the coalition partners of the government, he said. Responding to leaders who took a different line, Bokhari said: Does anyone from the Pakistan Peoples Party have any connection with the government? Different opinions on a specific issue are their personal views which have no connection with the party’s policy. Although Bokhari did not say that his party would support the ban, however, since the decision to ban a party is taken by the Cabinet and approved by the Supreme Court within 15 days, he indirectly pledged on behalf of the party to abide by the decision. The PPP's policy statement shows that the issue was not yet settled and it was not just a statement to put pressure on the PTI as the party's support was crucial. It also shows that the ruling PML-N was consulting its allies as its leadership had said that any final decision would be taken after considering the coalition partners. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said on Tuesday that the final decision to ban the PTI had not been taken and such a step would be decided only after consulting all allies.
