On the terrace of Mar-a-Lago or at dinners, President Donald Trump reportedly asked his friends and colleagues to choose between two administration leaders who could succeed him in 2028: Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The president addresses the subject that is slowly gaining momentum in Republican circles, wondering which of the two senior officials could win over Republican voters, according to the New York Times.

Vance, 41, is widely considered the favorite to take the reins of Trump’s legacy because of his popularity among moderate Republicans. But Rubio, 54,’s decades of political experience and multifaceted role in the current administration have resonated with many voters.

The president only asks the question for fun, Trump advisers said, according to the New York Times, and often suggests that the two men, whom he refers to as “kids,” should run on the same ticket.

But the constant conversations surrounding Vance and Rubio have sparked debates, especially as both men take on more public-facing roles.

Vance has taken a big step forward in foreign affairs, helping lead so-far unsuccessful peace negotiations with Iran and trying to rally support for Viktor Orbán, the former Hungarian leader who lost his re-election bid.

Recently, Vance has been deployed to rallies across the Midwest to connect with voters ahead of the midterm elections. The fact that the vice president grew up in a white, working-class family in Appalachia helped him interact with voters. But his recent stumble during a speech in Iowa attracted negative attention.

Once a “never Trump guy,” Vance’s rise to becoming Trump’s running mate reflects much of the Republican Party’s feelings toward Trump between 2015 and today.

After being heckled at a Turning Point USA event in April, Vance struck an understanding tone with young voters who disagree with the administration’s stance on the Iran war.

“I’m not saying you have to agree with me on every issue. What I’m saying is don’t disengage because you disagree with the administration on an issue,” Vance said.

But his attempt to strike a more diplomatic tone hasn’t translated into public polling, which shows voters find Vance rather unfavorable.

Despite his years in public service, Rubio is a lesser-known administrative official, according to a Pew Research Center poll.

But he has gained public attention, in part thanks to a meme that jokes about the many roles he fills while also serving as head of the State Department. Over the last year, Trump has appointed Rubio as acting national security adviser, former acting archivist of the United States and former acting head of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Every time a new role opens up, from Homeland Security secretary to attorney general to Iran’s supreme leader to the head of Spirit Airlines, Rubio becomes a meme.

His status as a wearer of many hats has made him a trusted leader within the administration. Rubio is already closely involved in foreign affairs, participating in talks with Iran and leading efforts to reform Cuba’s communist government.

But he has recently become a more public spokesperson, livening up the White House press conference with jokes and publicly making amends to Pope Leo XIV.

However, Rubio, a close friend of Vance, has publicly stated that he would not run against the vice president if he chose to run for president.

“If JD Vance runs for president, he will be our candidate and I will be one of the first people to support him,” Rubio said in an interview with Vanity Fair last year.
