China and the United States may have agreed to establish a “constructive” relationship characterized by “strategic stability”, but deep differences have left the future of the relationship uncertain, a forum in Beijing was heard on Saturday.

Sun said at the World Peace Forum hosted by Tsinghua University: “The two leaders have reached consensus on establishing a constructive relationship of strategic stability, but the two sides do not have a common consensus on what exactly that means.” »

It also highlighted a fundamental difference in priorities, with Beijing focusing on constructive aspects such as cooperation while Washington was more concerned with how to manage disputes.

For the United States, the most important issue is establishing regular channels of communication between its militaries, she added.

Sun said there was an urgent need to improve communication channels at the operational level – particularly that between US Pacific Command and its Chinese counterparts – to ensure a rapid response to any crisis in hotspots such as the South China Sea or the Taiwan Strait.

Sun also cited U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby’s stalled plan to visit China this year as further evidence of blocked communication channels.
