Djokovic beats Auger-Aliassime in historic match, updated Wimbledon men’s tennis bracket, results
Well, that was a great tennis match.
No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic defeated No. 3 Felix Auger-Aliassime in a five-set match for the ages, 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-4).
The match lasted five hours and fifteen minutes.
Djokovic survived the first set at the marathon to win a 12-10 tiebreak, although Auger-Aliassime was undeterred and claimed the second. Auger-Aliassime’s resilience was impressive, responding to a loss in the third set by winning a tiebreak 7-4 in the fourth.
It was fitting that the final set would result in a third tiebreak, this time for the match. None of these men intended to lose, and it’s honestly a shame that Auger-Aliassime ultimately did.
But Djokovic’s determination and unbreakable spirit have always been one of the calling cards of his career. Boy, did he call that Tuesday?
The 39-year-old came to Wimbledon looking for his eighth title at the All England Club, but his first since 2022. His last Grand Slam title came at the 2023 US Open, his record-breaking 24th major title.
His 106th win at Wimbledon, against Roman Safiullin in the Round of 16, set the record for most match wins at the tournament, surpassing Roger Federer.
“Not on my priority list,” he says told reporters. “I didn’t know about it until after the last match win… That’s actually quite insignificant to me at this point.”
Now he has 107 victories. He probably doesn’t care much about that either.
Of greater significance is that since Djokovic’s three Grand Slam titles in 2023, a new generation of stars has overtaken the sport. Carlos Alcaraz has won five of the last ten majors, Jannik Sinner has won four and Alexander Zverev just won the French Open.
Both Sinner and Zverev remain in the mix at Wimbledon, with Sinner set to face Djokovic in the semi-finals. Zverev will face American Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Alcaraz is currently recovering from a right wrist injury and has not played since the Barcelona Open in April.
Sinner holds a 6-5 lead over Djokovic all-time, although the latter snapped a five-match losing streak at this year’s Australian Open against his younger counterpart at the Australian Open, eliminating him in the semi-finals. Now they face each other again, this time with a spot in the Wimbledon final on the line.
The old guard versus the new. Sometimes the storylines write themselves. But first, Djokovic probably needs a good, long night’s sleep.
