Jack White blows up Donald Trump’s golden idol statue

Another day, another post from Jack White shaking his head at American politics. The rocker once again weighed in on the latest news coming out of Trumpland, speaking out on Sunday (May 10) about the unveiling of a 22-foot golden statue of Donald Trump that took place on May 6 at the Trump Doral presidential golf course in Miami.

“The most frustrating part of modern American life is trying to make sense of people who don’t even care that they make no sense,” White wrote alongside an image of the larger-than-life statue that appears to commemorate the moments after an assassination attempt on Trump at a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The golden statue, which depicts Trump with his right arm raised in a fist, made its public debut at a dedication ceremony presided over by evangelical pastor Mark Burns. Burns later denied claims the image, dubbed “Don Colossus”, promoted false idol worship during an appearance on LBC.

“It represents the miracle of God, that’s what it represents,” Burns said on air, adding that the sculpture was in no way a “golden calf,” a reference to the Old Testament story of the graven image made by the Israelites when Moses went up to Mount Sinai for fear that he would not return with the Ten Commandments. The calf now symbolizes the raising of a false idol and the rejection of God.

Shortly afterward, Burns reiterated his assertion that the statue was not blasphemous in a Sunday article on X. “There is a major difference between worship and honor,” he wrote. “Across America, we have statues honoring presidents, generals, civil rights leaders, athletes and cultural icons. From Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King Jr. to Michael Jordan, monuments have long been used to recognize influence, sacrifice, leadership and impact.”

Although other users commented on his post that these historical figures did not erect monuments to themselves and that pastors co-signing statues of Donald Trump while ignoring his scandals and divisive tactics have little to do with faith, Burns emphasized that Trump did not dedicate the statue to himself.

“This is a moment made possible by more than 6,000 patriots who came together to honor what they believe this movement represents: the strength, resilience, courage, and leadership that helped shape the future of the United States of America,” the televangelist wrote in his message to the project’s backers. “As Christians, we worship God alone. But Scripture also teaches us to give credit where honor is due. This statue is not about worship. It is about remembrance, gratitude, patriotism and the resilience of a movement that millions of Americans believe changed history.”

According to The Daily Beast, the statue cost $450,000 and was funded by a group of crypto investors who commissioned it as part of a promotional campaign for their memecoin $PATRIOT.

Trump faced retaliation for his repeated attacks on Pope Leo XIV over the American-born pontiff’s criticism of the U.S.-led war in Iran, and for posting what some called sacrilegious images of himself as Jesus. White, a former altar boy, also publicly questioned how the Catholic faithful could continue to support Trump after his multiple attacks on the pope’s character.
