Even as work continues on Donald Trump’s ballroom and the planned new East Wing, the president is already planning his next addition to the White House.

Trump is now considering adding a helipad to the White House, according to multiple reports.

The addition would be the latest in a series of transformations Trump has implemented at the White House. In addition to the new East Wing, Trump also paved the iconic Rose Garden, added gold accents to the building’s interior and installed new, much larger flagpoles on the exterior.

Why does the White House need a helipad?

Marine One helicopters currently land on small boards placed on the White House grass, but CNN reports that high-speed exhaust heat from the new VH-92A helicopters has “burned the grass.”

For this reason, this model has not been used in the White House for years.

The fleet of 23 VH-92As would cost about $4.95 billion, but Trump and former President Joe Biden used older models for their helicopter transport to and from the White House.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a helipad would prevent new helicopters from damaging the grass.

The Washington Post says a helipad could be installed on the South Lawn of the White House as early as this summer.

However, not everyone is a fan of this addition. In an interview with the Post, retired Col. Ray L’Heureux, who oversaw the Marine One missions, called it “aesthetically stupid.”

Prices have skyrocketed for some of Trump’s other renovations, including the Lincoln Memorial’s East Wing and reflecting pool, but it’s unclear exactly how much a helipad would cost.
