China denies Xi Jinping criticized Vladimir Putin in talks with Donald Trump, calls Financial Times report on Ukraine fake
A report in the Financial Times claims that Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump that Russian leader Vladimir Putin might “regret” his invasion of Ukraine.

The report also suggests that Xi’s alleged remarks mark a break from his previous meetings with former US President Joe Biden, during which he did not directly express his personal views on Putin or the war.
The Trump administration’s public disclosures did not include any reference to discussions about Putin or the war in Ukraine. The official fact sheet released after the Beijing summit was silent on these sensitive topics, underscoring how these diplomatic communications tend to be carefully curated.
The report surfaced just days before Putin’s planned visit to China, a trip loaded with symbolism as it marks 25 years since the conclusion of a key friendship treaty between the two countries.
China and Russia had already declared a “limitless partnership” shortly before the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Any suggestion of divergence between Xi and Putin – particularly on the war – would have major geopolitical implications.
The war in Ukraine, now more than four years old, remains at a stalemate and tactics are evolving. Ukraine is increasingly relying on drone warfare to strike Russian targets, including areas near Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky defended the recent strikes, calling them “completely justified” after Russia launched a major air attack on kyiv.
