Who is Helle Lyng, the Norwegian journalist who wanted to ask Prime Minister Modi a question?
Helle Lyng, a Norwegian journalist and commentator at the Oslo-based newspaper Dagsavisen, finds herself part of most political conversations in India today. Reason: she wanted to ask questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press conference in Norway.

Lyng made headlines after he called Prime Minister Modi at the end of a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store in Oslo, asking: “Why don’t you take a few questions from the world’s freest press?” Prime Minister Modi and his Norwegian counterpart did not respond as they were already about to leave.
The moment, captured on video and then shared by Lyng on X, quickly went viral and sparked political reactions in India and Norway. In his social media post, Lyng highlighted that Norway ranks first in the world press freedom rankings, while India is ranked 157th. She wrote that questioning world leaders was “the job” of journalists in democratic societies.
Face-to-face with MEA
Lyng works with Dagsavisen, a Norwegian newspaper based in Oslo. She has covered political and international affairs and was part of the media contingent that covered Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Norway.
The row snowballed later during an official Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) briefing when Lyng again questioned Indian officials on issues related to human rights, democracy and media freedom in India. She asked why the international community should “trust” India and whether Prime Minister Modi would start answering “critical questions” from the press.

His questions drew a forceful response from MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George, who defended India’s democratic institutions, constitutional guarantees and media ecosystem. The exchanges became tense on several occasions, with George accusing foreign critics of relying on selective reports from “ignorant NGOs” without understanding the scale and diversity of India.
Social media reactions and spying allegations
Following the viral exchange, Lyng claims she faced allegations of online abuse and conspiracy on social media, including accusations that she was a foreign “spy.” In a subsequent article on X, she rejected these claims and clarified that she was simply doing her job as a journalist.
“I never thought I would have to write this, but I am in no way a foreign spy,” she wrote, adding that her profession was journalism and she worked mainly in Norway.
Lyng also defended her decision to raise questions publicly during his visit to Oslo, saying that in Norway it is customary for visiting leaders to answer at least a few questions from the media during their official appearances. She noted that no such opportunity was offered during Prime Minister Modi’s engagements in Norway.
Political reactions in India
The controversy quickly spread across India’s political scene, with leaders from both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress weighing in on the exchange. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared the video online and criticized Prime Minister Modi for the episode, saying the prime minister seemed uncomfortable with journalists’ questions.
The BJP, however, rejected the criticism and accused the opposition of amplifying a routine diplomatic moment to target the government.
Responding sharply to the criticism, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya defended Prime Minister Modi and questioned the outrage over the incident. He argued that the Norwegian prime minister also failed to answer questions during the joint media appearance and accused opposition leaders of politicizing the issue.
