KP CM, Imran Khan’s sisters arrested from Adiala jail – Pakistan Today
Police on Tuesday stopped KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Imran Khan’s sisters from reaching Adiala jail, while other PTI leaders were also denied a meeting with the jailed former prime minister. This development comes amid renewed concern over Imran Khan’s health and his access to prison.
ISLAMABAD: Police on Tuesday stopped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi from visiting Adiala jail in Rawalpindi to meet imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, while several other party leaders and his family members were also denied access to the former prime minister.
According to the report, Afridi left for the jail along with Imran Khan’s sisters along with PTI workers and leaders. However, the delegation was stopped at Islamabad’s Chungi No. 26 and was not allowed to move forward despite arguments with the police.
Besides, PTI leaders Salman Akram Raja and lawyer Gohar Ali Khan, along with daughters of Bushra Bibi, reached Adiala jail but were also not allowed to meet Imran Khan. The report states that the cutoff time for prison visits is 4 p.m.
Imran Khan has been in jail since August 5, 2023, after being convicted in the Toshakhana case for concealing details of state gifts. He is currently serving a 14-year sentence in Adiala Prison in connection with a £190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust affair.
The Islamabad High Court had allowed the former prime minister to hold meetings twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with his family members, lawyers and other associates. Despite the order, the report said he has faced restrictions on meeting visitors for several months.
Health problems and medical check-up
According to the media cited in the source, a medical team went to Adiala prison to conduct a medical examination of Imran Khan, while his health condition in detention persisted.
The report said he underwent a medical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad on the night of January 24. This development was confirmed a few days later, although the family was apparently unaware of it at the time. Since then, he has undergone follow-up treatment at Pims.
This attempted visit came weeks after Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan suggested the KP chief minister to visit Adiala jail. The report states that Aleema visited the prison several times to try to meet her brother, but was denied access. Since this suggestion, Afridi also started visiting the prison.
Statements from Afridi and Aleema Khan
The stoppage of the chief minister’s convoy caused heavy traffic jams in the area, affecting many commuters. Those heading to the airport were reportedly among the worst affected, with some drivers taking the wrong side of the road in an attempt to reach their destination.
Speaking to reporters, Afridi said preventing the chief executive and cabinet members of a province from traveling for what he described as a peaceful meeting amounted to discrimination against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also addressed what he said was repeated disrespect towards Imran Khan’s sisters during previous visits, including the use of water cannons, while saying the party remained peaceful.
“What message are they trying to send? Do they want to separate Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Pakistan?” “Do they see the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa so weak that they can commit such cruelty?”
Afridi also said that during Imran Khan’s tenure as prime minister, Nawaz Sharif was allowed to visit the hospital for treatment, but similar considerations were not being given now despite what he called a serious eye problem.
“It is a fundamental human right that Imran Khan undergo treatment with his personal doctors, in the presence of his family members, at a hospital of his choice. »
In a statement published on X, Afridi said the government’s conduct was “not only an insult to the Chief Executive but also to the 46 million people of KP”. Referring to Imran Khan’s health, he added:
“The state of his health is a matter of grave national concern and any harm caused to him due to negligence or willful denial of medical attention is the direct responsibility of the Federal Government, the Punjab Police, the Adiala Prison Administration and their officials.” “History will not forgive those who remain silent or complicit. Justice must and will prevail.”
Aleema Khan also posted on X about the incident, saying:
“Having exhausted all democratic and legal avenues, we have no choice but to exercise our constitutional right to peaceful assembly to raise our voice against this illegitimate and stolen mandate government and its continued political victimization of Pakistan’s most popular leader.
She added that the party’s gathering point was one kilometer from the prison and said:
“The blocking of an elected chief minister and his cabinet is not just an attack on a political party; it is an attack on democracy itself, an insult to the mandate of millions of Pakistanis.”
The report said the government and opposition have been trading accusations for months over Imran Khan’s treatment and access to medical care. The opposition accused the government of lacking transparency, failing to guarantee adequate treatment and not allowing his personal doctors to see him. The government has denied these allegations.
The opposition also demanded that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital. Separately, prison authorities said Bushra Bibi underwent eye surgery at a hospital in Rawalpindi on April 17. Both remain imprisoned in Adiala prison.
