Brisbane Heat back Cricket Australia is set to open the BBL season in India

Brisbane Heat have raised their hands to be one of the first teams to play a BBL match abroad, opening this summer’s tournament in India.

Cricket Australia is said to have received some positive news in the last 24 hours in their quest to start the 2026-2027 season in India.

The move is said to be aimed at helping boost interest in the Indian market and also comes at a time when the privatization of BBL teams remains up in the air.

The challenge now is to determine which teams will go, as only two sides can be part of the action.

Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson said the move in Chennai was a good initiative by Cricket Australia, which was backed by Queensland Cricket.

“We have had the opportunity to discuss this with CA and support the initiative,” Svenson said.

“Off the field, the Brisbane Heat have been one of the competition’s best performing teams with a strong international following across social media, so we look forward to further discussions with CA.”

It has been reported that Cricket Australia had initially proposed internally that they would take the first match of the Big Bash abroad this summer.

They mainly mentioned India and Chennai as their preferred location.

In the last 24 hours, it has become clear that the Chennai governing body has approved it in principle and is waiting for the BCCI to sign it.

Several BBL franchises have said they would rather be the away team in Chennai than give up a home match.

The Heat are one of them and also hope to get their five allocated home games at the Gabba.

BCCI approval will be crucial.

The Sydney Thunder are a club with clear ties to Chennai through Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ashwin had initially signed for the Thunder last year as the first Indian player in the BBL before an injury ruled him out.

The club hopes to re-sign him this year.

But there are also Pakistani players involved in the BBL and history shows that getting them to India is an uphill battle.

Most BBL teams have had Pakistani players on their rosters, and the overseas player draw will take place later this year.
