He used elite defense, with a nice dose of showmanship, to win the first three points of the match. First he dug out a backhand and then took off diagonally to cover the short ball he expected from Djokovic, giving him ample time to hit a passing forehand shot behind the Serb. He let loose his angelic smile and then asked the feverish crowd for more – as if they needed some encouragement.

The first “I can’t believe he did that” sharp breather of the match came the point after, at 0-15. Djokovic sent a backhand slice from a short, sharp angle that Fonseca chased from the feet behind the baseline. He sent back a drop shot that soared over the net at an acute angle and flopped onto the clay like a feather:

Fonseca felt like himself afterwards. While getting into a position where he would normally slide a two-handed backhand across the court, he leaned forward over his left shoulder and cut the ball briefly into the court:

Djokovic served well to quickly win two points, and the next test of Fonseca’s newfound brightness arrived. Being pulled back from 0-40 to deuce would have meant a significant shift in momentum. Djokovic and Fonseca had traded the score from 3-2 to 5-5, with chances for a decisive break and shots of the highest quality. The risk was high that Djokovic would find a next step.

Instead, Fonseca went three-for-three. From behind the baseline, as nonchalant as can be, he fired another drop shot over the net and out of Djokovic’s reach:
