US ‘more than capable’ of resuming war with Iran, says Pete Hegseth | US-Israeli war against Iran
The United States warned on Saturday that it was “more than capable” of resuming war with Iran after President Donald Trump said any peace deal must respect its red lines, including that Tehran would never be able to develop nuclear weapons.
The White House had signaled Friday that Trump was close to a decision on an initial deal after weeks of mixed signals in tenuous negotiations, although Tehran denied there was a final agreement on ending the Middle East conflict that has shaken the global economy.
Trump emerged from the White House Situation Room after spending more than two hours with his top aides, but did not immediately announce his decision.
Meanwhile, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, while attending a major Asian defense summit in Singapore, said Saturday local time that Washington could restart the war if it wanted to.
“Our ability to start again if necessary is that we are more than capable, our stockpiles are more than adequate for that, both there and around the world, because of the way we balance exquisite and more abundant munitions,” he said.
This echoes US Central Command, which posted on X that US forces “remain present and vigilant throughout the region”.
Efforts to reach a Pakistan-brokered deal were challenged this week by US strikes on the southern Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, countered by Iranian retaliatory fire.
Nonetheless, the diplomacy continued to be part of a parallel process aimed at ending the fighting in Lebanon – which Iran insisted would be included in any formal end to the war and in which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces had made further progress even as military delegations from the two countries met at the Pentagon in Washington.
Two weeks after Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, Hegseth also said there was “legitimate concern” about Beijing’s military buildup, but that the United States was seeking a “respectful” regional balance.
His speech at the top of the Shangri-La Dialogue defense summit, which brings together senior defense officials and experts from about 45 countries, contrasted with his sharply confrontational remarks on China at last year’s event.
Unlike Beijing, which sent a panel of military experts and academics in place of Defense Minister Dong Jun for the second year in a row, Hegseth is leading a large U.S. delegation to the event that offers opportunities for both open debate and closed-door diplomacy.
“As we look at the region today, we see legitimate concern about China’s historic military buildup and expansion of its military activities in the region and beyond,” Hegseth said.
Washington is not seeking “unnecessary confrontation in the region,” he said, but rather “a truly stable balance.” [in Asia] it works for both the Americans and our allies.”
This means “a favorable but sustainable balance of power in which no state, including China, can impose its hegemony and challenge the security or prosperity of our nation and our allies,” he added.
He said the United States was seeking “respectful” and “good faith” engagement with Beijing, adding: “I wish my counterpart was here at this conference, but I look forward to other options when our paths may cross.” »
In Beijing, Trump talked about “fantastic” trade deals, but provided few details and then suggested Washington could use its arms sales to Taiwan as a bargaining chip with Beijing.
There has been “no change” in Washington’s position on Taiwan, but “any decisions regarding future arms sales to Taiwan… will rest” with the US president, Hegseth said.
Analysts say Dong’s no-show reflects Beijing’s confidence as an established power, reluctant to publicly answer for its assertive actions in the region.
But some say China also runs the risk of being left without a top policymaker if two major security issues arise: the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Beijing’s claim to Taiwan.
