PM Narendra Modi chairs marathon 4.5-hour meeting with Cabinet, says Viksit Bharat 2047 is a commitment, not a slogan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a marathon Cabinet meeting that lasted nearly four and a half hours, focusing on governance reforms, administrative efficiency, the government’s long-term vision ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and possible fallout from the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
According to the sources, Prime Minister Modi also asked Union ministers to work with the vision of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, emphasizing that this goal must be treated as a commitment rather than just a slogan.
The meeting, held at Seva Teerth from 5 p.m., was attended by Union Cabinet ministers, independent state ministers and state ministers in what sources described as the first plenary meeting of the Council of Ministers of the year.
Sources said the session effectively served as a mid-term review of the government’s performance as the NDA government approaches two years in office in its third consecutive term.
Presentations were made by more than half a dozen ministries, with nine ministries providing detailed information on their performance and future roadmap. The Cabinet Secretary and NITI Aayog also made presentations during the meeting.
Sources said the meeting also highlighted the ministries which recorded the fastest processing of cases, with emphasis on efficiency and speedy implementation of decisions.
During the meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also briefed the ministers about the Prime Minister’s recent five-country visit and the major diplomatic outcomes of the tour.
Additionally, PM Modi reportedly addressed the ongoing crisis in West Asia and its economic impact, ordering ministries to take measures to ensure “minimum inconvenience to citizens.”
Sectors such as energy, agriculture, fertilizers, aviation, shipping and logistics would have received special attention during the meeting.
An informal group of senior ministers led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is already monitoring developments. Rajnath Singh did not attend Thursday’s cabinet meeting due to his visit to South Korea, while Health Minister JP Nadda is currently in Geneva.
Sources said Prime Minister Modi was also congratulated at a meeting for the successful completion of his five-country tour and the party’s resounding victory in the West Bengal elections.
Prime Minister Modi returned to New Delhi on Thursday after concluding a five-country tour covering the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, focused on expanding India’s engagement in energy security, defense cooperation, trade and critical minerals.
In the UAE, India signed several agreements covering strategic oil reserves, long-term LPG supply, defense and shipping, with Abu Dhabi also committing $5 billion to invest. Modi’s meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan took place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in West Asia.
In Europe, India has deepened its strategic ties between several countries. In the Netherlands, the two sides signed 17 agreements and elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, with discussions also touching on tensions in West Asia and global energy stability.
Sweden and Norway also strengthened their ties, with the announcement of cooperation frameworks in areas such as clean energy, innovation, defence, digital technologies and critical minerals, as well as broader engagement at the Indo-Nordic summit.
In Italy, Modi’s latest stop, bilateral relations were transformed into a special strategic partnership during talks with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
