While in Greece the absence of a strong opposition has led to political ferment and the birth of political parties, in neighboring Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan is ensuring that the opposite happens, by dismissing – by court decision – the leadership of the powerful major opposition party.
The cancellation of the 2023 CHP congress decapitates the party founded by Kemal Atatürk in 1923 and cancels all its decisions and congresses since then. The party presidency will go to Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who distinguished himself by his defeat in each election against Erdogan since 2010 until he was replaced by Ozgur Ozel after a new defeat in the presidential elections of 2023. The Ankara appeals court ruled on Thursday that there had been corruption in this congress.
The Turkish government may claim the judiciary is independent, but the country’s judges are particularly eager to stamp out any possible threats to the president, who has been in power since 2003, first as prime minister and, after 2014, as president with rapidly expanding powers. The CHP’s dominance in the 2024 local elections has led Erdogan to intensify his grip on state institutions in order to ward off any possible threats.
So the charismatic mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, is in prison, prevented from running in the 2028 presidential election, which polls suggest he would win. He faces several (most likely trumped up) charges. Thursday’s decision leaves little hope of seeing the CHP recover, because Kilicdaroglu is very unpopular and also owes his position to the machinations of Erdogan.
Erdogan doesn’t care if foreign voices are muttering something about “democracy” or about the fallout from the Turkish economy. His priority is to obtain enough votes in Parliament to be able to call early elections, which would allow him to run for office. The probable divisions within the CHP could make this possible. What this means for democracy in Türkiye is clear. On the other hand, how a politically stronger but economically weaker Erdogan will behave abroad is unpredictable and will have a direct impact on Greece.
