Profile of Dadan Hindayana Who is Dadan Hindayana?

Dadan Hindayana was born in Garut, West Java on July 10, 1967. He is widely known among scholars as an entomologist who focuses on the science of studying insects at the Bogor Agricultural Institute.

Education background

Dadan completed his bachelor’s degree in agriculture at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) in 1990 as the top graduate of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases.

After completing his S1 degree, he continued his S2 at the University of Bonn, Germany, and graduated in 1997. He then continued his studies at the Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany, and graduated in 2000. He completed both studies with a specialization in applied entomology.

Academic career as professor of IPB

Since 1992, Dadan has been a lecturer at the Plant Protection Department of IPB. He taught in the postgraduate program of the Department of Entomology in the Faculty of Agriculture and was known for his productive production of scientific publications cited by many researchers.

Career history before joining BGN

Dadan’s professional journey outside of teaching began when he was given a strategic position on campus. He is recorded as having served as Secretary of the Autonomy Implementation Preparation Office (2001-2002), Director of the Directorate of Institutional Development and Business Support (2003-2008) and Acting Director of the Cooperation Directorate (2007-2008).

Dadan’s career continued when he became the principal of Agricultural and Entrepreneurial High School (STPK) Banau, Halmahera North, from 2014 to 2022.

Inaugurated at the head of the National Nutrition Agency

On August 19, 2024, Dadan Hindayana was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo as head of the National Nutrition Agency, making him the agency’s first leader. BGN itself is a new institution established by Presidential Regulation Number 83 of 2024.

Dadan’s task is no joke, as he is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, which is one of the biggest priority programs of the Prabowo-Gibran government.

Controversy over BGN leader

During his nearly year-and-a-half tenure, Dadan’s leadership has not been immune to scrutiny. One of the most provocative public reactions is the policy of purchasing electric trail motorcycles which would require budgets of up to billions of rupees per unit, as well as the purchase of socks for SPPG officers and laptops.

More recently, Dadan also planned to expand the MBG program to Saudi Arabia, which reportedly received a response from Indonesian schools there. This statement immediately sparked a debate in the public.

Reasons for impeachment by President Prabowo

The removal was based on President Prabowo’s assessment of the free nutritious meal program for one and a half years. The assessment revealed a number of issues including discipline in SOPs, governance and BGN food quality.

Dadan himself accepted the decision with a broad mind. According to him, this change is the absolute right of President Prabowo, and he thanked him for the opportunity to carry out his duties over the past year and a half.
