Donald Trump: relations with Iran are “much more professional” in the context of peace negotiations

US President Donald Trump said US relations with Iran were improving amid reports of a 60-day ceasefire on Sunday.

“Our relationship with Iran is becoming much more professional and productive. They must understand, however, that they cannot develop or obtain a nuclear weapon or bomb,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social article.

Trump also said he had asked U.S. negotiators not to “rush to a deal” with Iran.

“The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner, and I have informed my representatives not to rush into an agreement because timing is on our side. The blockade will remain in full force until an agreement is reached, certified and signed,” he added.

“Both sides need to take their time and do things right. There can be no mistakes!” he added.

Trump calls on Middle East countries to rejoin Abraham Accords

The president then thanked all Middle Eastern countries that contributed to the mediation efforts and called on them to join the Abraham Accords for peace with Israel.

“I would like to thank all countries in the Middle East so far for their support and cooperation, which will be further enhanced and strengthened by their joining the nations of the historic Abraham Accords and, who knows, maybe the Islamic Republic of Iran would like to join too!”

Later in the day, Trump pushed back against claims that the emerging deal with Iran was not ideal for the United States.

“If I make a deal with Iran, it will be a good and appropriate deal, not like the one Obama made, which gave Iran massive amounts of CASH and a clear and open path to a nuclear weapon,” he wrote on Truth Social.

“Our deal is the exact opposite, but no one has seen it or knows what it is. It’s not even fully negotiated yet. So don’t listen to the losers, who criticize something they know nothing about. Unlike those before me who should have solved this problem many years ago, I don’t make bad deals!”

Republican lawmakers and Rubio clash over Iran deal

Truth Social’s post follows Saturday’s phone call between Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which Netanyahu stressed that Israel would preserve its freedom of action against threats on all fronts, including in Lebanon.

“During last night’s conversation with President Trump, the prime minister emphasized that Israel will maintain its freedom of action against threats in all areas, including in Lebanon, and President Trump reiterated and supported this principle,” an Israeli political source told Reuters on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

According to the Israeli source, the United States informs Israel about the negotiations with Iran.

“President Trump has made clear that he will remain steadfast in negotiations on his continued demand for dismantling Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of all enriched uranium from its territory,” the source said, “and that he will not sign a final agreement without these conditions being met.”

Since then, several U.S. lawmakers have said any deal that leaves Iran with influence over the Strait of Hormuz, access to funds or nuclear capabilities would be a failure.

In response, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump’s commitment to ending the war “should not be questioned by anyone.”

“The idea that this president, given everything he has already proven that he is willing to do, is somehow going to agree to a deal that will ultimately put Iran in a stronger position when it comes to nuclear ambitions is absurd,” Rubio said at a news conference in India.

“The president wants the world to be in a place where it no longer has to fear or worry about an Iranian nuclear weapon,” he said, adding that there was “some good news on that front.”

“The president’s preference is to find a diplomatic solution to these problems. He would much rather have the State Department solve this problem than the War Department, but the problem will be solved one way or another,” Rubio said.
