ISLAMABAD: A recent meeting between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, PTI President’s lawyer Gohar Ali Khan and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has triggered considerable political speculation, with various claims circulating regarding the nature and purpose of the interaction.

However, well-informed sources close to the matter told this correspondent that the meeting, which was held on the 14th of this month at Barrister Gohar’s residence in Islamabad, was not limited to only discussions on terrorism and security issues, contrary to some official reports.

According to sources, Barrister Gohar’s residence has also previously served as a venue for sensitive high-level contacts and is considered a reliable channel for informal communication between the PTI and relevant authorities.

Although the deteriorating security situation and concerns related to terrorism were raised, political issues would have formed a significant part of the discussions. Sources said the discussions particularly focused on issues related to PTI founder Imran Khan, including ensuring better access for his family members and party leaders to meet him in prison.

“If the discussion had been focused solely on security, the location and participants would likely have been different,” noted a source familiar with the discussions. The meeting is described by insiders as part of an ongoing engagement to reduce political tensions and create space for broader understanding between stakeholders.

Sources said PTI representatives raised concerns that continued restrictions on meetings with the jailed former prime minister could further worsen the political climate. The discussions also reportedly addressed medical access and other humanitarian concerns related to the PTI founder.

At the same time, the discussions included an exchange of concerns and “red lines” from the authorities’ side, notably those related to the establishment’s reservations regarding the political conduct of the PTI.

Importantly, sources rejected the impression that the meeting took place under pressure or coercion. “Neither Mohsin Naqvi was forced into these talks, nor were Barr Gohar and KP Chief Minister pressured. The aim was simply to foster understanding and improve the environment,” a source said.

According to insiders, the broader aim of the engagement is to explore ways to address concerns on both sides, those of the establishment as well as those related to Imran Khan, his family and the PTI leadership, with the aim of lowering political temperatures and avoiding further confrontations.

Sources said Aleema Khanum’s statement on social media on the matter had hurt these behind-the-scenes reconciliation efforts. “This has seriously compromised the possibility, under consideration, of allowing the sisters to meet Imran Khan,” a source said.
