Police fire tear gas to disperse opposition protest in Türkiye
IZMIR, Türkiye – Riot police in Türkiye fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse a rally called by ousted opposition leader Ozgur Ozel, the May 26days after a court removed him from office.
The demonstration in the city of Izmir took place two days later riot police entered the headquarters of the main opposition party, the CHP in the capital Ankara, firing tear gas and beating party members before expelling them.
These dramatic scenes followed a shocking court decision May 21 which canceled a 2023 party primary that elected Mr. Ozel.
It is the latest in a series of measures against the CHP, Turkey’s oldest political party, which won a major political victory over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AKP in 2024 local elections and has risen in the polls.
Since the judgment, the party has been in chaos.
Mr. Ozel called the Izmir gathering at noon as Turkey was about to shut down for the four-day Eid al-Fitr holiday, which begins on May 27.
Ahead of the rally, the governorate ordered the closure of the city’s central Cumhuriyet Square, deploying large numbers of riot police equipped with water cannon trucks, who attempted to disperse the flag-waving crowd, Turkish media reported.

Mr. Ozel, who addressed a large crowd waving Turkish flags in a nearby square, called for a party congress after the four-day break, in an appeal to Mr. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who was reinstated by the court as head of the CHP.
“We should hold a party congress immediately,” he said.
“This is a question between the people and Tayyip Erdogan… It’s about stopping a party that is on the march to ultimate power.”
Mr. Ozel and his leaders were ousted following trial regarding allegations of vote buying in the 2023 primary.
The case was dismissed in October 2025 for lack of substance, but the decision was overturned on appeal.
The assault on the CHP began in earnest with the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Mr Erdogan’s main political rival and the party’s presidential candidate, on charges widely seen as political.

“Just as he imprisoned the presidential candidate who could defeat him, he is now effectively shutting down the political party that could defeat him,” he said.
