Donald Trump’s popularity rating drops, which motivates the latest polls
Trump pushes for Iran war deal as talks advance and tensions rise
President Donald Trump is signaling progress in Iran war negotiations while warning of a resumption of conflict and urging regional nations to rejoin the Abraham Accords.
Donald Trump’s approval rating continues to decline – currently reaching historic lows in the polls, as economic concerns and voter frustration rise ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Here’s what the latest polls show.
Trump’s job approval rating fell below 40% last week for the first time this term, according to RealClearPolling. Although this downward trend began a few months ago, against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Iran and rising prices in the country, concern is growing within the Republican Party as the November midterm elections approach.
At the same time, 65% of Americans surveyed by the Economist/YouGov poll say the country is heading in the wrong direction — a key indicator that analysts often watch closely during election years — while voters’ preferences in early midterm showdowns are starting to show movement.
In a generic congressional vote, 40% of respondents said they would vote for a Democratic Party candidate in the upcoming midterm elections, compared to 35% who said they would vote Republican and 24% who said they were still unsure or said they would not vote at all. Even though a significant portion of voters are still undecided, the numbers in favor of Democrats are up slightly in recent polls.
Midterm elections typically serve as a referendum on the president and Congress, all of which currently have Republican majorities. A Democratic victory in the House or Senate would give them control of at least one or both branches of Congress and make it more difficult for the president and the Republican Party to adopt their agenda, or even risk another impeachment of Trump.
What’s changing the least in the polls is what Americans see as their most pressing problems. People of all ages, genders, races, and education levels overwhelmingly chose “inflation and prices” as the most important issue, followed by “jobs and the economy,” “health care,” and “taxes and government spending.” Opposition to the war in Iran and Trump’s handling of it also remains around the 60% mark.
A whopping 75% of Americans rated the current state of the U.S. economy as fair or poor, compared to 22% who rated it good or excellent. The poll indicates that 63% of respondents believe the economy is getting worse, while only 15% describe it as improving, with a significant majority of respondents saying housing, gas and grocery prices are increasing where they live.
What is Donald Trump’s presidential approval rating currently?
Trump’s presidential approval rating is now at an all-time low of 39.8% approving of his job performance compared to 58.3% disapproving, according to RealClearPolling. He has declined from an initial high of 50.5% approval and 44.3% disapproval when he took office in January 2025.
Trump’s current approval ratings are lower than his first term’s average approval ratings of 42.8% and also those of former President Joe Biden, whose overall approval rating was 43.2%.
According to the May 26 Rasmussen Reports daily poll, Trump’s approval is now at 43%, with disapproval at 56%. The Economist/YouGov poll, completed May 18, found Jobs’ approval rating of 41 percent to 57 percent disapproval, down from 43 percent approval before the Iran war. The most recent Quinnipiac poll found 34 percent approval to 58 disapproval. 14 pollsters, including AP/NORC, FOX News, Reuters/Ipsos, Harvard-Harris, RMG Research and others, show that the overall favorability for Trump is currently 39.8% as of May 26, up from 43.5% before the Iran war.
Note: Polls are constantly changing and different pollsters ask for the opinions of different segments of the population. These figures reflect the poll on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 12 p.m.
Who has the lowest presidential approval rating of all time?
Although the president has fallen to an all-time low of 39.8% in opinion polls this term so far, Trump has hit a low of 34% during the first term and other recent presidents such as Biden have hit a low of 36%, Barack Obama has hit a low of 40%, George W. Bush has hit a low of 25% and Bill Clinton has hit a low of 37%, according to Gallup polls, including the lowest mark on record was Harry Truman with 22%.
When it comes to highest presidential approval ratings, George W. Bush holds the highest approval rating ever at 90%, while his father, George HW Bush, holds the second highest approval rating at 89%.
Trump is the only president who has not achieved an approval rating of 50% or higher to date in Gallup polling history.
