PM Modi calls for precaution and kindness as India endures heatwave

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged people to take precautions and remain vigilant against heat-related illnesses, amid “rising temperatures”.

“This heat is hard on all of us and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible. Please stay hydrated, keep water with you when you go out. Offer others a glass of water,” he said in the first of a series of messages, adding that “kindness goes a long way.”

In another article on X, he warned Indians to watch out for the symptoms of heat stroke.

“Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea or extreme fatigue. If anyone around you is feeling unwell, weak or developing a headache, it is best to help them by moving them to a cool, shaded area immediately. Make sure they have water, ORS, etc. that help them,” Modi said.

He reminded the nation that children, the elderly and those who work outdoors were particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.

Modi’s social media posts come at least a week after much of India began facing a lingering heatwave. Although this is common during Indian summers, weather experts had already warned that 2026 would likely see a strong El Nino, which would only make matters worse.

Indian media are reporting cases of water shortages in several towns and villages. Meanwhile, at least 16 people have died in the southern state of Telangana, among hundreds of heatstroke cases reported across the country.

Maximum temperatures reached around 47 degrees Celsius (116 degrees Fahrenheit) in several regions, making conditions extreme for gig workers, construction workers and service providers who rely on a daily wage.

The Indian Prime Minister also reminded citizens to leave water for birds and animals.

“Let us also remember the birds and animals around us. A small bowl of water kept outside your house, balconies, terraces, shops or offices can become a lifeline for a thirsty bird. May compassion guide us in these difficult days,” he said.

According to the Air quality and weather monitoring website AQI.INthe top 70 hottest cities in the world were in India on Wednesday afternoon.
