‘Pakistan as mediator is more than problematic’: US Senator Graham demands response on Abraham Accords

Washington, D.C. [US]May 27, 2026: Republican Senator Lindsey Graham once again raised questions about Pakistan’s neutrality as a mediator between the United States and Iran in ceasefire talks, citing Islamabad’s “animus” toward Israel, calling their role “problematic.”

This comes after Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif rejected US President Donald Trump’s push for Islamabad to rejoin the Abraham Accords, saying the country would not support any agreement that conflicted with the country’s “core ideologies”.

Graham accused Islamabad of “hosting” Iranian military aircraft at their air bases, while calling the Pakistani leaders’ comments “troubling”, raising serious doubts about their impartiality in conducting the mediation talks.

“It has become apparent to me for some time that Pakistan as mediator is more than problematic. Their animosity towards Israel is long-standing. There is no denying that Iranian military aircraft are hosted at Pakistani air bases, and past rhetoric from top Pakistani officials against Israel is worrying,” he said in an article on X.

Speaking on the Pakistani Defense Minister’s remarks, Lindsey Graham feared Islamabad’s feelings towards Israel and demanded an immediate response on its official position regarding Trump’s call to rejoin the Abraham Accords.

“Regarding the Defense Minister’s comments on the Abraham Accords, saying Pakistan would never join because it does not trust Israel: the clip may be a year old, but I fear the sentiment is new. In this regard, it is imperative that Pakistan responds now to President Trump’s call to rejoin the Abraham Accords,” he said.

In an interview with Pakistani television channel Samaa TV, Asif was asked about the possibility of Pakistan signing the Abraham Accords following pressure and diplomatic signals from US President Donald Trump.

“Personally, I don’t think we should adhere to an agreement of this type that conflicts with our core ideologies,” Asif said in the interview.

Questioning the credibility of engagement with Israel, the Pakistani defense minister added: “How are you going to sit with these people who cannot be trusted for even a day?

He further reiterated Islamabad’s long-standing position on the issue, saying, “We have a very clear position that this is not acceptable to us.” »

Asif also highlighted Pakistan’s passport policy towards Israel, emphasizing the country’s refusal to recognize the Jewish state. “And secondly, on our passports, we are the only country whose passports do not even include the name Israel,” he said.

The development comes after Trump pushed several Muslim and Arab countries to rejoin the Abraham Accords as part of a broader regional settlement linked to the potential deal with Tehran, while noting that negotiations with the Islamic Republic were “going well.”

In a lengthy article on Truth Social, Trump said the proposed deal could become a “historic event” for the Middle East and called on countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain to sign the Abraham Accords simultaneously.

“Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran are progressing well! It will only be a big deal for all or no deal at all,” Trump wrote, warning that failure to reach an agreement could mean “going back to the front lines and shooting, but bigger and louder than ever.”

Trump said Saudi Arabia and Qatar should immediately rejoin once a deal is reached with Iran and that other countries should follow.

The Abraham Accords are a historic agreement signed under US mediation in 2020 that led to the normalization of diplomatic, economic and security relations between Israel and several Arab countries.
