Erdogan marks Eid al-Adha with message of solidarity with Gaza, calls for global Muslim unity on Palestine
* He blasts Netanyahu over Gaza genocide, calls him a ‘tyrant’
“I also believe that the tyrant known as Netanyahu will learn the necessary lesson at the hands of the world’s Muslims,” the Turkish president said as he marked the Muslim holiday with messages of solidarity for Palestinians amid Israel’s war on Gaza.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan celebrated the Muslim holiday of Eid-al Adha, or Feast of Sacrifice, on Wednesday.
In a message, Erdogan described Eid al-Adha as a “spiritual blessing” and said he hoped the occasion would bring good to Turkey, the Turkish nation, the Islamic world and humanity as a whole.
“To all our brothers and sisters who welcome this holiday with sadness, pain and deep sadness in different corners of our spiritual geography, especially those in Gaza, I send my strongest messages of solidarity in my name and in my name and in my name, and I congratulate them individually on the occasion of Eid al-Adha,” he said.
On Wednesday, millions of people across Turkey prayed on the first day of the holiday.
Separately, speaking to reporters at Camlica Mosque in Istanbul after Eid prayers, Erdogan said religious festivals aim to strengthen social ties and mutual support.
“Above all, the holidays are days of love, respect, unity, conviviality and solidarity,” he said.
The Turkish leader said the situation in Gaza cast a shadow over Muslim celebrations in Türkiye and around the world.
Erdogan berated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing him as a “tyrant” and expressing hope that Muslims around the world would unite to oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza.
“I also believe that the tyrant known as Netanyahu will learn the necessary lesson at the hands of the world’s Muslims,” he said.
Turkey has been one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, with Erdogan repeatedly calling for an immediate ceasefire, expanded access to humanitarian aid and greater international pressure on Israel.
His remarks come as Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha, amid ongoing tensions and humanitarian concerns in Gaza and across the Middle East.
The holiday commemorates the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son at the command of God, before the last-minute divine replacement of a ram.
Muslims sacrifice animals in commemoration of this intervention and share the meat with the poor and their relatives.
