Canada eliminated by Finland in the semifinals of the Men’s Hockey World Cup

The IIHF World Championship isn’t the Olympics, but some Canadian stars were hoping to wash away the bad taste from three months ago.

Finland had other ideas.

A dominant second period lifted Finland to a 4-2 victory against Canada in the World Cup semi-finals in Zurich, Switzerland, on Saturday.

Finland defeated Canada 29-21, suppressing both of Canada’s power plays.

Finland will take on host Switzerland in Sunday’s gold medal match, while Canada will face Norway, who lost 6-0 to the Swiss earlier on Saturday.

Canada led 2-1 and closed the first period thanks to goals from Dylan Holloway and Robert Thomas.

However, Finland’s surge in the middle 20 minutes kept Canada on its heels throughout the second period. Aleksander Barkov, Konsta Helenius and Aatu Raty scored in a twelve-minute spell that turned a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead for Finland.

Canada was never able to overcome the second period. Finnish goaltender Justus Annunen held on during several Canada chances in the third period to secure the victory.

While the Canadian roster was hardly comparable to what was on display at the Olympics three months earlier – Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and many other Canadian stars were nowhere to be found – there were still plenty of standouts representing Canada in this tournament.

The headliners were Macklin Celebrini and Sidney Crosby, both of whom have had strong tournaments. Celebrini leads Canada with 12 points from eight games, while Crosby is second with 10 points from eight games.

There were plenty of other big Canadian names in attendance, including Thomas, Holloway, John Tavares, Ryan O’Reilly and Mark Scheifele. For much of the tournament, Canada was as dominant as expected, going undefeated through the preliminary matches and into the quarterfinals.

However, their first loss was enough to rule them out of the gold medal.

Earlier, some of Canada’s best players said it was an important tournament, even without some of the best players in the world.

“I think it’s important to get Hockey Canada back on track,” said Celebrini, the 19-year-old captain of Team Canada. The Athletics last week. “Losing last year at the World Cup, that was devastating. And the way the Olympics went, well, it was really devastating. I just think we have to get back on track. I think it’s important to win something.”

The best they can do is win a bronze medal on Sunday.

Barkov, who was stellar throughout the tournament after missing the entire Florida Panthers season due to a torn ACL and MCL in September, was named Finland’s best player. Holloway was named Canada’s best player of the game.

The IIHF also announced the top three players of the tournament for each team.

Celebrini, Crosby and goalkeeper Jet Greaves received that recognition for Canada.

Barkov, Henri Jokiharju and Jesse Puljujarvi received top three billings for Finland.

Canada has not won the IIHF World Championship since 2023. Last season Denmark was stunned in the quarter-finals.
