DHAKA, May 28 (Reuters) – A rare albino buffalo from Bangladesh – nicknamed “Donald Trump” because of his distinctive blonde tuft – was spared from being sacrificed for Eid al-Adha after a last-minute government intervention, a home ministry official said on Wednesday.

The nearly 700 kg (1,543 pound) animal had already been sold for ritual slaughter when authorities intervened, citing safety concerns after a surge in public interest in the run-up to Thursday’s festival.

Interior Minister Salahuddin Ahmed ordered that the buffalo be spared, the buyer refunded and the animal transferred to the National Zoo in Dhaka.

The farm’s owner, Ziauddin Mridha, said the name came from his younger brother, who noticed the resemblance.

Mridha added that the animal is exceptionally gentle and requires careful maintenance, including frequent feeding and regular bathing.

Albino buffalo are rare in Bangladesh, where most cattle are dark in color, making them a standout animal during the peak livestock season of Eid – although it’s the nickname that probably saved its life.
