Treasury ‘ready’ to print $250 bill with Trump’s face if law passes

President Donald Trump could be the first living person in more than 160 years to appear on U.S. paper money, if current law changes.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed during a news conference Thursday that his agency had “prepared in advance” to print a $250 bill bearing Trump’s image to commemorate the country’s 250th birthday. Bessent said his agency would move forward if legislation to change current U.S. law passes.

“As Treasury Secretary, I have two mandates regarding U.S. currency. Right now, no living person can use U.S. currency, and the currency must say ‘In God We Trust,'” Bessent said. “Right now, there is a bill being proposed – before the House, before the Senate – to change the first requirement so that a living person, Donald J. Trump, can be on the $250 bill.”

Current U.S. law states that only deceased individuals can appear on U.S. currency and securities.

In 1866, Congress passed a measure known as the Thayer Amendment, which prohibited portraits or likenesses of living persons on U.S. bonds, securities, notes, fractional currency, and postal money. The move followed a scandal in which the portrait of Spencer M. Clark, a Treasury Department official, was printed on a 5-cent fractional bill.

In February, Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina introduced a bill that would create an exemption to the ban for people who have served as president.

A Treasury Department spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

Trump’s likeness is also expected to appear soon on U.S. commemorative coins, and it already appears on a $1 million visa “gold card” and on a banner installed at Justice Department headquarters.

In March, the Treasury Department announced that Trump’s signature would appear on future U.S. paper money, breaking with a long-standing tradition of having U.S. bank notes carry the signatures of Treasury officials rather than the president.

Bessent said during Thursday’s conference that he didn’t think it was inappropriate to put Trump’s face on a currency.

“I don’t think there’s anything untoward about the person who was president of the United States being on the 250th anniversary bill,” he said.
