The majority of members of the Scottish Affairs Committee have said it should launch an investigation into Peter Murrell’s misappropriation of SNP funds.

Bathgate and Linlithgow MP Ms Sullivan said: “With each day that passes, more and more questions need answers.

“These issues should be investigated in the first instance at Holyrood, but if it becomes clear that there are concerns about how funds from the UK Parliament have been used, this could be a matter for a Westminster parliamentary committee and I would support such an investigation.”

Kilmarnock and Loudon MP Ms Jones said: “We need to make sure this falls within the remit of the committee.

“Clearly public funds have been paid to the SNP.

“Certainly, if the Scottish Affairs Committee has the right to hold an inquiry, I will support it.”

Glasgow North East MP Ms Burke also confirmed she supported an investigation.

The four join Liberal Democrats Susan Murray and Angus MacDonald, Labor Douglas McAllister and Conservative Harriet Cross in calling for an inquiry.

Committee chair and Labor MP Patricia Ferguson has not yet said publicly whether she wants an inquiry.

SNP Westminster leader Dave Doogan – who also sits on the committee – is yet to comment.

Labor MP Elaine Stewart is yet to comment – ​​but she will soon leave the committee as she was recently appointed as a UK government aide.

The Scottish Affairs Committee is supposed to scrutinize the work of the UK government.

But it has been suggested that an investigation into the SNP could take place because the party received public funds.
