Gatot Nurmaanto on Ryamizard, when he realized an idea considered impossible
Bogor Regency (ANTARA) – Former TNI Commander Gatot Nurmantyo remembers former Chief of Army Staff (KSAD) and Minister of Defense Ryamizard Ryacudu as a leader who could realize various ideas that in his time were considered impossible.
Gatot conveyed this after visiting the Ryamizard Funeral Home in Puri Wira Bhakti Housing, Cikeas, Gunungputri, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Sunday.
According to Gatot, one of the most memorable examples of Ryamizard’s leadership was when he encouraged the construction of road access under the TNI Manunggal Village Development (TMMD) program in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami.
At that time, he explained, many parties considered the construction of a land road connecting a number of tsunami-affected areas difficult to achieve because the terrain was severely damaged and cut off in several places.
“It was he who decided at TMMD to build a road from Banda Aceh to Teunom. At that time, many thought it was impossible because the road was interrupted due to the tsunami,” Gatot said.
Even though he encountered various obstacles on the ground, Ryamizard still demanded that the program be implemented. Thus, an access previously considered difficult to penetrate could finally be connected in accordance with the set objective.
“He asked for it to be done and finally it was achieved. Until the deadline, the journey was successfully completed,” he said.
Gatot believes this success reflects Ryamizard’s vision, which often exceeds the perspective of many people around him.
“I told him I thought it was unreasonable because my thoughts didn’t reach that point. He had a vision that was really trustworthy and ultimately proven,” he said.
In addition to being known for his great vision, Ryamizard is also said to have made important contributions to the development of the TNI army organization by training various combat units and strengthening the capabilities of soldiers.
According to Gatot, one of the legacies still felt today is the formation of the Raider Battalion, which was part of efforts to increase the professionalism and combat readiness of the Indonesian military.
“He was also the one who formed the Raider Battalion. His efforts to create a professional army are very important,” he said.
Gatot said that the various ideas and policies left by Ryamizard provided an important basis in the development of the TNI AD to date.
Ryamizard is a retired high-ranking TNI army officer who served as army chief of staff from 2002 to 2005.
Under the administration of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, Ryamizard was entrusted with the position of Minister of Defense for the period 2014-2019.
Ryamizard Ryacudu died at the age of 75. Through Sunday evening, grieving relatives, military personnel, state officials and the public continued to arrive at the funeral home to pay their last respects.
