Column O’ Big Band at King’s Place

Sing Seven Seas, the latest album from trombonist and big band leader Callum Au, is quite the undertaking. Two volumes of music “composed for an expanded ensemble of more than 80 musicians.”

The stage at Kings Place cannot accommodate 80 people. I counted about 20 people or more. But Au’s album launch last night (Saturday, May 30) sounded just as rich. After a very brief introduction the band went straight into Bandwagon Blues, showing how easily they could fill a room.

As I’ve found from many big band gigs, audiences are usually most entertained when the band is performing. That was certainly the case here, from the opening numbers to Ellington and Basie-inspired numbers, from the bass trombone rendition of Two Views of the Blues to the delightful exchange between Au and Barry Clements (‘Bourne Showcase’, also featuring the brilliant Mark Nightingale).

But more than just a collection of fun big band compositions, Sing Seven Seas is a truly well-conceived project. As well as the Count and the Duke, Au’s Influencers Suite has homages to Kenny Wheeler and the late Sammy Nestico, Galt’s Motor has some fusion guitar from Jake Wilson, and Tethys has great melodies from Tom Walsh (flugelhorn) and Lauren Weavers (cor anglais). Through the Deep Dark Woods is an adaptation written by Au’s 3-year-old son (omitting the bathroom humor that toddlers admire). Jazz.ai tells the story of a rogue jazz LLM released from a fictional conservatory, with storybook narration written by Katie Emmerton. There is more tongue-in-cheek humor than serious critical assessment of the rise of AI in music.

Sticking with the narrative structure, the real highlight of the night was Si vispacem para Carnyx, which imagines a battle between a Celtic tribe and an invading Roman army. This included Kay Stephen playing fiddle and whistling folk tunes with Jessie Grimes, while Au herself belted out a fanfare to the towering Carynx. It was, he admits, a Celtic war horn he bought on impulse from eBay (pictured above).

The somewhat unconventional arrangements and instrumentation seen last night are the result of Callum Au’s approach to producing Sing Seven Seas. It’s a masterpiece of British jazz that “brings together almost all of my favorite musicians” (studio recordings also include Emma Rawicz and Gareth Lockrane). This runs the risk of the sound clashing and becoming confusing, but that’s not the case here. It’s nicely constructed, tightly laid out, and – as I said – very enjoyable to look at and listen to.
