Former Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu dies
Former Minister of Defense, General (retired) TNI Ryamizard Ryacudu, died today.
According to Karo Infohan, Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait. Ryamizard died at RSPAD Jakarta, Sunday (5/31/2026).
“We received the sad news of the death of General TNI (retired) Ryamizard Ryacudu today,” Brigadier General Rico said.
Brigadier General Rico said that former Defense Minister Ryamizard died at 14:03 WIB at Gatot Soebroto Military Hospital, Central Jakarta.
Ryamizard was born on April 21, 1950. He graduated from the Army Military Academy in 1974. His career began to take off when he served as Pangdam V/Brawijaya in 1999 and then became Pangdam Jaya/Jayakarta in 1999-2000.
The 64-year-old was then appointed commander of Kostrad in 2000 and served until 2002. Ryamizard then served as army chief of staff until 2005.
Ryamizard’s name was sent to the DPR as a candidate for the position of TNI commander. However, it was Marshal Djoko Suyanto who was ultimately chosen as TNI commander in 2006.
This father of 3 was once favored as a vice-presidential candidate to accompany Joko Widodo. However, Jokowi eventually joined forces with Jusuf Kalla in the 2014 elections.
Then, under the Jokowi administration, Ryamizard served as Minister of Defense for the 2014-2019 term. During his term as Minister of Defense, one of the programs he carried out was that of National Defense.
In 2019, while still Minister of Defense, Ryamizard was awarded the highest veteran award star of the Veterans Legion of the Republic of Indonesia (LVRI) by LVRI General Chairman TNI Lieutenant General (Ret.) Rais Abin.
Additionally, in 2019, Ryamizard handed over his position to Prabowo Subianto, who was appointed Minister of Defense by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo. Prabowo served as defense minister replacing Ryamizard from 2019 to 2024.
In 2021, General (Ret.) TNI Ryamizard received an Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) in Defense Science in the field of Universal Warfare from the Indonesian Defense University. Prabowo, who was Defense Minister at the time, attended the award ceremony. ***
