Calls on Asian allies to increase defense spending

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is urging allies in Asia to oppose China’s growing power and prevent domination of the country.
Hegseth made the comments Saturday in Singapore, where he is attending the annual Asian defense and security conference, IISS Shangri-La Dialogue. Defense ministers from a number of other countries are taking part, including Norwegian Tore O. Sandvik (Ap).
– There is justified concern about China’s military buildup and the country’s expanding military activities in the region and beyond, Hegseth said, according to Reuters.
Furthermore, he said that one country’s dominance in the Pacific region would destroy the regional balance of power, according to the AP and Reuters news agencies.
“No state, including China, can impose its hegemony and endanger the security or prosperity of our nation and our allies,” Hegseth said.

At the same time, Hegseth said the United States expects all its Asian allies to increase defense spending to 3.5 percent of GDP.

Hegseth reiterated President Donald Trump’s demand that allies shoulder more of their own defense costs.

This is the second time Hegseth has spoken at the conference, according to AP. Last year, the tone was even harsher, but this year’s conference comes just two weeks after Trump’s visit to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Hegseth also visited Beijing and said during his speech in Singapore that China and the United States should build “a constructive relationship characterized by strategic stability, based on fairness and mutual benefit.”
Chinese military chief Meng Xiangqing welcomed Hegseth’s remarks regarding the meeting between Xi and Trump. He said the agreement the leaders reached “should provide strategic direction for China-US relations for the next three years and beyond.”
