Trump’s Interior Secretary rejects calls to identify donors for ‘non-partisan’ concert series | Trump administration
Trump administration Interior Secretary Doug Burgum complained Sunday that some musicians “appear to have segmented their audiences” after artists backed out of a series of concerts planned for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
In CNN’s State of the Union interview, Burgum also rejected calls for publicly identified people to have donated to the concert series — and maintained that it was a “nonpartisan” event despite Donald Trump calling it a rally.
“I can’t weigh in on musician politics because some musicians want to play music for everyone. And some musicians seem to have segmented their audiences the same way politicians do,” Burgum told State of the Union host Dana Bash. “Freedom 250 and the celebration of 250 is a non-partisan event. »
Bash hit back at Burgum over the nonpartisan claim, saying the musicians claimed they were misinformed that the event in Washington, D.C., was apolitical.
Asked about Trump calling it a Maga rally, referencing the president’s slogan Make American great Again, Burgum replied: “Well, that’s true, but it’s something that I think we can all definitely understand.” »
Burgum said he didn’t know if the concert series was going to be canceled. He renewed his complaints about criticism of the concert series when asked about its funding and whether donations to the series would ever be publicly disclosed.
“It’s not about donor transparency,” Burgum said. “This is about Americans celebrating the 250th anniversary, again about the fact that we have so much to celebrate in our country right now – and we’re talking about one event in one night” in the nation’s capital.
Trump criticized musicians who pulled out of the summer concert series planned to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
At least seven of the nine artists canceled their scheduled performances, saying they were misled by organizers that the event would be nonpartisan. They included the Commodores, C+C Music Factory, Martina McBride and Milli Vanilli.
In a Truth Social article published Saturday, Trump considered replacing them personally.
He wrote: “I understand that artists are getting ‘yaps’ about their performance on Wednesday, so I’m thinking of bringing in the number one attraction all over the world, the man who draws a much larger audience than Elvis in his heyday, and he does it without a guitar, the man who loves our country more than anyone, and the man who some say is the greatest president in history…, DONALD J TRUMP, to replace these highly paid third rate ‘artists.’ and deliver a major speech, rallying the country as I have done since becoming president! »
The President added: “I only want to be surrounded by happy people, smart people, successful people, and people who know how to WIN. So, copying this TRUTH, I am directing my representatives to examine the feasibility of holding an AMERICA IS BACK rally on Wednesday, in Washington, DC, at the same time, in the same place. Only great patriots are invited – it will be a wild and beautiful celebration of America!”
In a message released the same day, Trump said, “We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for $250, instead of having overpriced singers that no one wants to hear, whose music is boring and yet all they do is complain.” »
Burgum touched on other topics during his interview with CNN, including defending the high profit margins of contractors who were awarded no-bid contracts from the Trump administration to upgrade the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool for the 250th anniversary celebration.
Additionally, Burgum told CNN that the administration could appeal a judge’s order to remove Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
