You don’t have to read between the lines to understand that Badenoch is promising a return to traditional conservative values of bungling for business and austerity for the masses:
I want men and women who understand that it is not the government that creates growth; it’s a deal. That the State should do fewer things but do them well. This economic policy should reward not only efforts but also risks. We cannot and must not have a risk-free environment.
They must be realistic in budgetary matters. There are no perfect solutions, only compromises. Everything has a cost. There are no free lunches…or free breakfast clubs.
Although she targets the Labor Party in the headline, much of the article is clearly directed at former colleagues who have defected to the Reform Party. Take the offending paragraph:
But that’s not all. I have overhauled the candidate selection process for Conservative MPs to seek out the next generation. We need candidates with the five Cs: they must be intelligent, have charisma, communication skills, conviction and, above all, be conservative.
I will not allow people who do not share our beliefs to use the Conservative Party as a vehicle to achieve their personal ambitions.
On the one hand, she is right to suggest that conservative defectors have used the party “as a means of furthering their personal ambitions.” On the other hand, this is clearly true for most conservatives, whether they defected or not.
