Cracks appear in PTI as over 25 lawmakers skip KP party parliamentary meeting

Signs of internal divisions within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emerged on Sunday as more than 25 lawmakers remained absent from a parliamentary party meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar.

The meeting, chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, was reportedly attended by only 75 legislators out of the 92 members of the parliamentary party.

Party sources said several disgruntled legislators, including former chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Fazal Elahi and Nek Muhammad, did not attend the meeting. Most of the absent members cited being abroad or having other commitments as reasons for their absence.

Sources added that some legislators were unhappy with the chief minister after he was excluded from the provincial cabinet.

Addressing the meeting, CM Afridi said the high turnout despite what he described as continuous propaganda was a proof of unity within the party.

“I welcome all the assembly members who attended today’s meeting. No one can break us, nor force us to retreat from the ideology of Imran Khan,” he said.

Afridi said opponents tried to create divisions within the PTI but failed to weaken the party. He said the meeting’s agenda included briefing lawmakers on the health of PTI founder Khan and a discussion on the budget for the coming fiscal year.

The chief minister said PTI leaders were not allowed to meet Khan and expressed concern over his health. He claimed that the former prime minister had suffered an 85% loss of vision in one eye and demanded that he be able to receive medical treatment from doctors and at a hospital of his choice, in the presence of his family.

CM Afridi also accused the federal government of disenfranchising Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying gas and wheat supplies to the province had been disrupted. He claimed that the federal government owed the province more than Rs4.5 trillion and that the PTI was working with other political parties to secure the rights of the province.

He said next year’s budget would be people-friendly and development projects would reflect Khan’s vision.

“No advanced block”

Speaking to Geo News in Peshawar, PTI President Barrister Gohar Ali Khan dismissed reports of any advanced bloc within the party or the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, saying all members remained united under the leadership of the PTI founder.

Gohar said differences of opinion were natural in a democratic party, but stressed that all decisions would be taken by consensus. He added that all party members were present at the meeting except those who were abroad.

Dismissing claims that provincial affairs would be handled by individuals acting independently, Gohar said the government was owned and operated under the leadership of the PTI founder. He said CM Afridi had Khan’s full support and the party would support and protect him.

The PTI president further said that all members of the provincial assembly were united behind Afridi and remained committed to strengthening the party’s rule in the province.

Earlier, KP Information Minister Shafi Jan also dismissed reports of an advanced bloc within the PTI, saying all lawmakers continued to support the chief minister. He warned that any MLA who deviated from the party line would face serious political consequences.

“There is no forward bloc in the PTI. Whoever deviates from the line of the PTI founder will end his political future,” he said.
