London will not have to pay compensation to Rwanda for the failure of the asylum agreement
The UK will not have to pay compensation to Rwanda for the failed asylum deal pushed by the Conservative government and canceled by Keir Starmer’s executive. This was decided by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, which rejected Kigali’s demand for more than 100 million pounds.
The Rwandan government argued that London had violated the terms of the agreement, which provided for the transfer of asylum seekers who arrived irregularly to the United Kingdom in exchange for financial compensation. However, UK lawyers argued it made “perfect sense” to cancel the scheme when Labor came to power and there was no obligation to make further payments. The deal, announced in 2022 under Boris Johnson and later developed by Rishi Sunak, aimed to deter the arrival of migrants in caravans via the Channel.
