Taiwan opposition leader visits US
The leader of Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), Cheng Li-wun, is heading to the United States on Monday for a two-week visit.
This trip comes two months after his visit to Chinawhere she met with President Xi Jinping and discussed the need to work to “promote cross-Strait reconciliation and create prosperity and peace in the region.”
China considers Taiwan, which is governed independently, a breakaway province and has not ruled out the use of force to retake it.
Cheng will likely face tough questions
With the United States being Taiwan’s main military supporter, Cheng will likely be questioned about her role in blocking a Taiwanese government plans to spend nearly $40 billion on weaponsincluding American weapons.
Regarding the question of her willingness to meet US President Donald Trump, Cheng told a press conference: “I am of course very willing.”
She said she was ready to meet anyone “pro-peace” and in a strong position of authority, just like her meeting with the Chinese leader.
“The same applies to President Trump. Anything that helps peace, I am ready to do; I am ready to meet anyone who helps peace, not to mention the most critical decision maker and leader, who is the President of the United States,” Cheng said, as quoted by the Reuters news agency.
What else can we expect during Cheng’s visit?
Cheng is expected to visit San Francisco, Boston, New York, Washington and Los Angeles.
According to her trip itinerary, she is expected to meet with U.S. lawmakers, government officials, as well as various think tanks and supporters.
Before her visit, Cheng said she hoped her party could play a key role in regional peace efforts and “earn greater trust from the United States.”
