Aleema denies meeting ex-army chief with Imran in Adiala jail

Aleema Khan has dismissed viral claims that a former army chief met Imran Khan in Adiala jail, calling them false and part of a disinformation campaign. She alleges continued isolation, restricted access and inadequate treatment.

ISLAMABAD: Aleema Khan on Monday strongly rejected reports circulating on social media regarding an alleged meeting between incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan and a former army chief at Adiala Prison, calling the claims completely false and part of a deliberate disinformation campaign.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Aleema Khan categorically rejected the reports, saying no such meeting took place.

“All reports circulating on social media that a former army chief met Imran Khan in Adiala jail are false,” she said.

She added that the matter was verified with Gohar Ali Khan, who also confirmed that the reports were completely baseless.

According to Aleema, the airing of such claims appeared aimed at distracting public attention from what she described as the PTI founder’s continued isolation and concerns over his treatment in prison.

“This is disinformation, particularly spread to distract from the fact that Imran is being tortured in total isolation,” she said.

Aleema alleged that the former prime minister was not receiving proper treatment for his eye problem and continued to face restrictions in his communications with his family members. She further claimed that Imran was denied access to books for the past six months and was denied television facilities in his jail cell.

Highlighting what she described as severe limitations on outside contact, Aleema said Imran had effectively been cut off from the outside world for months.

“He has not been allowed contact with anyone from the outside world in the past six months, with the exception of two court-ordered visits from his lawyer,” she said.

She referenced an existing court order that she said allows for regular meetings with family members, attorneys and party representatives.

“There is a court order that allows at least 18 people to visit him every week – six family members and six lawyers on Tuesday and six party members on Thursday,” she said.

Aleema argued that access to her family, legal counsel and political colleagues were rights protected under Pakistani law as well as international legal standards.

“These are his legitimate rights under Pakistani laws and international laws,” she argued.

The clarification came amid widespread speculation on social media over the weekend that a former army chief of staff had secretly met Imran Khan in Adiala prison. No official confirmation of such a meeting has been provided by the authorities and PTI leaders have publicly denied the claims.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 and is currently serving sentences in several cases, including a 14-year sentence in the £190 million corruption case and a 17-year sentence in the Toshakhana-II case.

Concerns about his health and conditions of detention have periodically surfaced in recent months. In January, the former prime minister underwent a medical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, a development that was officially confirmed by the government days later. Since then, he has continued to receive follow-up medical treatment.

His family has repeatedly expressed concerns about communication restrictions with his sons, Kasim Khan and Suleiman Khan, who reside in London with Imran Khan’s ex-wife. Family members said the two men were not allowed to speak with their father and accused authorities of delaying visa procedures.

The issue of access to Imran Khan has remained a recurring point of contention between the PTI and the authorities. The party regularly holds protests and sit-ins outside Adiala prison on Tuesdays and Thursdays – days designated by court order for meetings with the former prime minister.

PTI leaders have repeatedly complained that scheduled meetings are not being held as per court directives. On May 20, Aleema Khan and Sohail Afridi claimed that shots were fired near participants during a PTI protest outside Adiala Prison, further escalating tensions around the issue.

Aleema Khan’s latest statement reflects PTI’s ongoing concerns over the conditions of its founder’s imprisonment, while also seeking to counter what party leaders say was misinformation regarding his status and contacts during his incarceration.
