Kennedy Center Moves to Remove Trump References After Judge Says They Were Added Illegally

WASHINGTON — The Kennedy Center has begun the process of removing references to President Donald Trump, a week after a federal judge ruled that his name was illegally added to the performing arts center.

Roma Daravi, vice president for public relations at the Kennedy Center, said in a statement to The Associated Press that “we are complying with the court order while evaluating all legal options to preserve this revitalization and recognize President Trump’s leadership.”

In a memo to staff at the Kennedy Center’s Office of General Counsel on Thursday, the institution’s lawyers said electronic signatures, letterhead and other documents must reflect the name “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” or “Kennedy Center.”

The changes, the memo said, must be completed by June 12.

In a May 29 ruling, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper also blocked the administration from closing the cultural and arts venue for major renovations that were scheduled to begin in July.

Hours after the decision, Trump said he was abandoning the overhaul and making arrangements to cede to Congress control of what, until the Republican president’s second term, was known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The next day, Trump called Cooper on social media an “anti-Trump hater” and predicted that the performing arts center he wanted to close for a two-year overhaul “would soon be closed, and probably never reopen.”

Visibly angered by his latest legal setback, he said it was “impossible for me to be treated fairly,” linking Cooper’s decision to previous losses, including the Supreme Court’s February rejection of his sweeping tariffs.

The removal marks a setback in the president’s plans for his second term to remake many of Washington’s monuments — and add new ones.

On Thursday, his administration said renovations had been completed on the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool, painting the background what Trump called “the blue of the American flag.” The East Wing of the White House was demolished to build a grand ballroom, and Trump plans to build an arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
