Prabowo calls criticism of foreign visit strange
BANDAR LAMPUNG: President Prabowo Subianto sees criticism of the intensity of his foreign visits as contradictory, as his predecessor, Joko Widodo, was criticized for traveling abroad too rarely.
Prabowo made this statement during his speech at the National Conference of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (Hipmi) in Bandar Lampung, Wednesday (10/6).
According to Prabowo, criticism of the president over foreign visits never seems to stop, no matter how frequent or rare a head of state’s visits abroad are.
“There are presidents like Pak Jokowi, who rarely go abroad, who are blamed, right? ‘Jokowi never went abroad. Jokowi doesn’t care about foreign policy,'” Prabowo said, as quoted in the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube show.
He then compared this situation with himself, who is now often criticized for traveling abroad too often.
“I often go abroad, (I was told) ‘Prabowo often goes abroad’. It’s strange,” he said.
Prabowo admitted that the criticism did not really bother him because he believed that every leader would definitely face different opinions from the public.
“The noise is still there. The important thing is that we are sure of the position of our line. As long as I am sure that I am working for the Indonesian nation and people, I will never hesitate,” he stressed.
THE WORLD IS UNCERTAIN
Prabowo believes that the current global geopolitical situation requires Indonesia to actively build relations with various countries.
He said increasingly uncertain international dynamics mean Indonesia needs to expand its diplomatic networks and maintain communication with different parties.
“We don’t know who we are friends with, who we are against,” he said.
If the latest agenda is met, Prabowo will travel to Russia again on June 17 to attend a high-level meeting that will also be attended by President Vladimir Putin.
This visit will be Prabowo’s fourth visit to Russia in a year.
In total, Prabowo reportedly made 54 foreign visits to 29 countries in the first 19 months of his rule.
For comparison, his predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo made 16 state visits, while former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made 10 foreign trips during his first full year in office.
Malaysia is the most visited country, five times, followed by the United Arab Emirates and France four times each.
The frequency of these visits has sparked debate within the government’s budgetary efficiency policy.
However, Prabowo stressed that these diplomatic activities were part of the implementation of the free and active foreign policy inherited from the nation’s founders.
“We are lucky, I am lucky, the Indonesian president has accepted the legacy of our nation’s founders that Indonesian politics is one of non-alignment,” he said.
Prabowo stressed that Indonesia does not want to be bound by any military pact and will continue to pursue a foreign policy of non-alignment.
“We do not want to be involved in a military pact with anyone. That is why, as soon as I received the mandate from the president, I immediately presented our policy as that of the non-aligned, the non-aligned and the free to be active,” he concluded.
