Variety slams Donald Trump for hosting UFC 250 Freedom event at White House: ‘Idiocracy’

There are few things the left hates more than celebrating America. Especially when these celebrations involve grander displays of patriotism or are organized by someone who does not share their political ideology or belief system.

Which made Sunday night’s UFC event outside the White House a perfect storm for members of the left-wing media desperate for something to hate. And boy, boy did they hate to see an event scheduled to celebrate the United States.

Variety, ostensibly a publication dedicated to covering the entertainment industry, published an extraordinarily angry column by Marlow Stern, who claimed the UFC event was reminiscent of a scene from the movie “Idiocracy.”

“At no time has the Trump presidency more resembled a scene from “Idiocracy,” Mike Judge’s 2006 satire about a philistine society that abhors intellectualism, than on Sunday night, as the White House hosted UFC Freedom 250 — a series of MMA brawls on the South Lawn meant to commemorate America’s 250th birthday, but in reality to honor President Donald’s 80th birthday J. Trump, a man whose thirst for adulation and public spectacle will never be quenched,” she wrote.

And now ? You don’t have to be a UFC or MMA fan to have enjoyed the views and pageantry of the event. The flyover, the atmosphere, the crowd and the impressive feat of building the platform, stage and stands on the White House lawn. All paid for by the UFC, not American taxpayers.

Stern was also furious that the “garish ceremony” was shown on Paramount+. For what? Because it’s owned by CBS.

“The gaudy ceremony was broadcast live on Paramount+, a streaming platform owned by David Ellison, a Trump loyalist who has reshaped CBS News to be more MAGA-friendly.”

Somehow, it seems unlikely that Stern would have the same complaints if, say, MSNBC aired a “gaudy” Biden administration event celebrating Pride Month or something similar. Because this isn’t about the UFC, David Ellison, or any sane, rational complaint. This is simply blind hatred towards Donald Trump and anything that can even be indirectly linked to Trump. Not to mention that “reshaping” CBS to be “MAGA-friendly” simply means trying to inject some objectivity into its reporting and broadcasts. But Stern is so accustomed to all the news and media she consumes being slanted in her political direction that equality seems like an imbalance.

Did Stern end up there? No, of course not. When Joe Rogan described the event as a “surreal” experience, Stern somehow linked it to…Jan. 6?

“I don’t know if it was more surreal than seeing a violent mob of thousands of Trump supporters lay siege to the Capitol, some smearing their own feces on its walls, on January 6,” she wrote.

This is the real reason for this column. Stern is an angry liberal, someone whose entire perspective on the country, on sports, on entertainment, is based on the president’s ideology. When it comes to a Republican, every event, every comment, every movie must be judged through that lens. When a Democrat is in charge, it’s the opposite.

When the Biden administration staged a number of bizarre performances, celebrations and statements, Stern and those like her angrily denounced anyone who criticized them. But now that there’s a celebration of America’s birthday with a special sporting event? Get out the outrage.

It’s lazy, it’s repetitive and it’s predictable. In a nutshell, this is a politically motivated left-wing critique.
