ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Tuesday said only Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif can comment on PTI’s demand to allow a meeting with jailed party founder Imran Khan before contributing funds to the federal government.

Speaking on Geo News’ ‘Capital Talk’, the Finance Minister said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government had no objection “in principle” to reducing development expenditure to release funds to the Centre.

Recalling a “very good meeting” with KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Finance Advisor Muzammil Aslam, the Finance Minister said all provinces, including KP, have significantly supported the Center throughout the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. “As you know, the IMF program is not only the federal government’s program this time. Only the Prime Minister can decide on this request,” he added.

The Finance Minister’s remarks came just hours after PTI general secretary Salman Akram Raja’s lawyer said the KP government would only approve a three-month budget document if a meeting with the party founder was not held before June 30. Speaking to the media at Adiala Road, Raja said the final budget would not be presented until consultation with the former prime minister took place.

Meanwhile, the PTI general secretary said he had spoken with CM Afridi on the matter, adding that Article 125 of the Constitution allows the presentation of a budget for a period of three months.
