In a surprise change, President Trump left Turkey on an older Air Force One plane instead of the luxury Boeing 787 offered by Qatar last year, raising questions about security and renovations.

Now let’s move on to some unexpected travel arrangements for President Trump. He traveled to Türkiye aboard the new Air Force One, a luxury Boeing 747 donated by the government of Qatar. After the United States and Iran launched a new round of military strikes on Wednesday, Trump left Ankara aboard an old Air Force One plane. This is NPR’s Joel Rose.

JOEL ROSE, BYLINE: Normally, a president’s trip abroad is an afterthought. This time, the surprise change raises many questions about security. Trump was asked about this during his press conference in Türkiye.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #1: I would like you to respond to speculation that you will leave Ankara without boarding the new Air Force One due to security concerns involving Iran.

ROSE: In response, Trump acknowledged that he was likely a target of the Iranian military.

(SOUNDBITE OF PRESS CONFERENCE)

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: I am number 1 on Iran’s kill list.

ROSE: But Trump hasn’t said exactly why he left Turkey, which shares a border with Iran, aboard one of Air Force One’s older planes instead of the newer model offered by Qatar last year. Then the next reporter followed up.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #2: But why don’t you go home with the new plane?

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #2: Why don’t you fly Air Force One’s new home?

TRUMP: He’s flying to Europe.

ROSE: This time, Trump gave the same explanation he gave on Truth Social: he would fly on the oldest plane, quote, “for old times’ sake.” The two planes stopped at a British air base in eastern England, where many American troops are stationed.

TRUMP: So the soldiers can see it because it’s really beautiful.

ROSE: Then Trump brought his planes back on the new Air Force One for the return trip. The older Boeing planes that serve as Air Force One have extensive missile detection and self-protection systems. Experts told NPR last week that the new plane donated by Qatar likely lacks some of these capabilities because of how quickly it was upgraded.

The Air Force referred questions to the White House, which called the new plane, quote, “a cutting-edge aircraft equipped with high-level safety protocols,” without citation, and said the United States was using every tool at its disposal to address threats, including misdirection.
