Iran-US war live: Trump hopes to put war in ‘rearview mirror’, says Strait of Hormuz will remain free

Trump hopes war in Iran will be just a ‘rearview mirror’

US President Donald Trump hopes that the war in Iran will be in the “rearview mirror” after the formal signing of the peace agreement, the details of which remain unknown to US lawmakers.

Asked if the president would now focus on the war in Ukraine, Trump replied: “We were focused on Iran. It’s going to be in the background, in the rearview mirror… I want to do everything I can. »

Few details have been made public about the initial deal, but it is expected to include reopening the Strait of Hormuz to global oil shipments, financial incentives for Iran if it meets certain criteria and a 60-day period for negotiations on ending the country’s nuclear program.

The agreement will be officially signed on Friday in Geneva.

Iran deal includes $300 billion fund: report

A $300 billion private fund to boost investment in Iran is included in the U.S.-Iran framework agreement and more than half of that has already been committed, Reuters reported.

The fund is designed to give both sides an economic incentive to reach a final agreement to end the war, the agency reported, citing sources.

More than half of the amount has already been committed and will be made up entirely of private sector funds, according to the report.

U.S. and Iranian officials said Sunday they had agreed on a framework to end their war, which began when U.S. and Israeli forces attacked Iran on Feb. 28, end the U.S. blockade of Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key supply route for global oil and gas.

The new fund is a private investment vehicle, not a reconstruction or repairs program and will not include any government money or grants, the source said, adding that companies based in the United States, Gulf Arab states, Asia, South America and Africa have agreed to pledge funding.

The promised investments cover energy, logistics, manufacturing and transport, the source said.

A senior Iranian source told Reuters that Tehran initially asked the United States for $400 billion in compensation for war damages, but Washington said it would not provide it.

The idea of a fund, which should be called the Reconstruction and Development Fund, was then born.

Australia relaxes travel advice to Middle East

Australia this morning eased its travel advice for several Middle Eastern countries, allowing Australians to transit and travel to the Gulf’s largest air hubs with the security of being covered by insurance.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the previous “do not travel” advisory was lowered for the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Israel and Kuwait after the United States and Iran reached an interim deal to end the war.

She said the advisory was intended to “reconsider your need to travel” to these countries, as the security situation could further deteriorate rapidly without warning.

The removal of the “do not travel” warning is positive for Gulf airlines. They had carried more than half of all passengers traveling from Europe to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands before the war began in late February, according to aviation data firm Cirium.

Many Australian travelers concerned about the risk of missiles and drones, “schedule disruptions and lack of travel insurance coverage” had favored flights on carriers such as Qantas Airways, Singapore Airlines and Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways that transited through Asia, driving up airfares.

Canada says US-Iran deal ‘game changer’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the U.S.-Iran peace deal was a “game changer” and that Ottawa supported efforts to implement the truce.

“We are very pleased with the agreement that has been reached. It lays the foundation to ensure that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon and could also allow for reintegration over time of the region’s economies as well as progress toward a settlement in Lebanon,” Carney told CNN.

The Prime Minister said he had seen the deal and “absolutely” supported it. The text of the agreement has not been made public by the Trump administration.

Oil prices stabilize below $80 per barrel

Oil prices rose slightly in early trading this morning, recovering some of the previous session’s losses, as investors assessed whether the war with Iran would actually end and the Strait of Hormuz would reopen.

Brent crude futures gained 47 cents, or 0.6 percent, to $79.43 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures rose to $76.53 a barrel, up 48 cents, or 0.6 percent.

Both benchmarks fell about 5 percent for a second straight session yesterday, hitting their lowest level in three months, on hopes that a deal between the United States and Iran would allow oil to pass through the strait.

Iran will get some benefits ‘if it behaves well’: JD Vance

US Vice President JD Vance said Iran would get some benefits “if it behaves well”.

“The Iranians could get all these benefits if they behave well.

“If they stop expanding terrorism, if they stop financing terrorism, if they stop supporting the rebuilding of the nuclear weapons program, they can actually get real benefits from it,” Vance said on Fox News Tuesday night local time.

“If they don’t do any of this, they won’t get anything,” he added.
